About the Heated Drain Mast Assembly

A heated drain mast assembly is an externally mounted, aerodynamically faired fitting that channels galley and lavatory gray water overboard while internal electric heating elements prevent the discharge port and mast from freezing at altitude. As an airframe component, it routes fluid through a heated passage and out a trailing edge, the heater maintaining flow against icing and the fairing minimizing drag and ice accretion. Principal failure modes include heater element burnout and open circuits, thermostat or controller faults, scale and biological fouling that restricts the drain passage, external erosion and impact damage to the mast, and corrosion or cracking at the skin interface. Frozen or clogged masts cause backflow and leakage, driving heater replacement, descaling, and reseal during repair.
