About the Horizontal Stabilizer Actuator
A horizontal stabilizer actuator is a flight-control actuation device that drives the movable horizontal stabilizer to trim the aircraft in pitch, typically a high-load electromechanical or hydromechanical screwjack with a primary and secondary load path for fail-safe redundancy. Mounted at the empennage, it converts motor or hydraulic input into linear travel of the stabilizer pivot, holding position against substantial aerodynamic hinge moments. Within the actuation system it provides slow, precise, sustained-load positioning rather than rapid surface deflection. Repair and overhaul are driven by ballscrew and nut wear, backlash growth, no-back brake degradation, gimbal and bearing fretting, gear scoring, internal corrosion, and seal leakage on hydraulic variants, all of which can compromise the integrity of this flight-critical component.
