About the Pitot Tube
A pitot tube is a forward-facing pressure probe mounted on the airframe that senses ram (total) air pressure for the pitot-static system, supplying the data used to compute airspeed and supporting altitude and Mach reference. Air entering the probe head is brought to stagnation, and the resulting total pressure is routed through internal passages to air data instruments or computers, while integral drain features manage moisture. Most incorporate an electric heating element to prevent ice blockage in flight. Typical degradation includes blockage or partial obstruction from contamination, insects, or corrosion, cracked or eroded probe tips, internal moisture and corrosion affecting pressure integrity, and heater element failure or open circuits. These conditions drive inspection, flow and leak testing, heater verification, and overhaul.
