About the Surge Valve Shutoff
A surge valve with shutoff function protects compressor or air cycle machine airflow by relieving or bypassing air to prevent aerodynamic surge while also providing positive isolation of the affected line when commanded. It is generally a butterfly or poppet valve with a pneumatic actuator and control logic that modulates or closes in response to flow and pressure conditions. Because it operates in a high-temperature bleed-air environment with frequent cycling, its principal degradation modes are seat and seal erosion, actuator and diaphragm wear, sticking or binding of the valve element, thermal fatigue, and internal leakage that undermines surge protection or shutoff.
