Component Overview

The shutoff valve is a generic on/off isolation device used throughout pneumatic and air management systems to permit or block the flow of bleed or conditioned air on command. Installed in ducting between sources, packs, and distribution lines, it provides positive isolation for system control, protection, and maintenance, with the closure element driven by an electric, pneumatic, or solenoid actuator and held by spring or pressure bias. Because it cycles under elevated temperature and pressure, it commonly suffers seat and seal wear that causes internal leakage, actuator degradation and sluggish or incomplete travel, bearing and shaft wear, corrosion, and contamination that impairs sealing. Leakage testing, response and position checks, seal and bearing replacement, and actuator overhaul return it to reliable open-and-close operation.
