About the Condenser

A condenser in the air cycle environmental control system extracts moisture from conditioned air by cooling it below its dew point so liquid water can be collected and removed, protecting downstream ducting and distribution from icing and corrosion. It is typically a compact plate-fin or tube core in which cold turbine-discharge air condenses moisture out of warmer process air. Because it handles condensing water under thermal cycling, its principal degradation modes are corrosion, internal and external leakage from cracked fins and brazed joints, fin damage, and fouling that reduces heat-transfer effectiveness and raises pressure drop. Inspection commonly reveals weeping seams, blocked passages, and corroded surfaces. Overhaul restores the core through cleaning, repair, brazing, and proof and leak testing to recover rated condensing performance and leak-tightness.
