About the Environmental Control Unit
An environmental control unit is a packaged air-cycle assembly that conditions engine bleed or external air to provide pressurization, cooling, and ventilation for the cabin and avionics. Sitting at the heart of the air-cycle system, it typically combines an air-cycle machine with compressor and turbine stages, heat exchangers, water separation, and associated valving on a common frame. Its primary function is to expand and cool high-pressure, high-temperature air to deliver conditioned air at regulated temperature and flow. Service-driven degradation includes air-cycle machine bearing wear and shaft imbalance, turbine and compressor blade erosion, heat-exchanger core fouling and leakage, seal deterioration, and water-separator coalescer breakdown. These conditions raise vibration, reduce cooling capacity, and prompt overhaul to restore aerodynamic performance and structural integrity.
