About Air Cycle Machines in Aircraft Systems
The air cycle machine (ACM) is the heart of an aircraft's air conditioning and pressurization system, sometimes referred to as the cold air unit or the core of the refrigeration pack within the environmental control unit. Drawing energy from hot, high-pressure bleed air, the ACM expands that air across a turbine to cool it, conditioning the supply that ultimately reaches the flight deck and cabin. Related rotating assemblies in this family include cooling turbines, vaneaxial fan assemblies, recirculation and ground cooling fans, avionics fans, and bearing air coolers, all of which move or condition cabin and equipment air.
Air cycle machines are high-speed rotating turbomachinery. A typical unit couples a compressor and an expansion turbine on a common shaft supported by precision bearings, and the assembly is balanced to operate at very high rotational speeds. Construction generally combines lightweight machined housings, aluminum or steel turbine and compressor wheels, and an air- or oil-lubricated bearing system. Because the rotor runs continuously at extreme speed under thermal and pressure loads, bearing wear, shaft imbalance, seal degradation, and contamination gradually reduce performance.
Overhaul restores cooling output, reduces vibration, and re-establishes safe operating margins before bearing distress can progress to rotor damage. QTC overhauls these assemblies for operators of platforms from makes including Pilatus, ATR, British Aerospace / Hawker Beechcraft, and SOCATA.
Our Air Cycle Machines Repair Process
QTC begins by capturing incoming functional and vibration data, then fully disassembles the air cycle machine into its rotating and static components. Parts are cleaned and inspected dimensionally, and non-destructive testing is applied to turbine wheels, compressor wheels, and shafts to detect cracks, wear, and fatigue. Bearings, seals, and life-limited hardware are replaced, and worn surfaces are evaluated against serviceable limits.
Because these are high-speed rotating assemblies, rotor balancing is a central step: the rebuilt rotor is precision-balanced to control vibration and protect the new bearings throughout the operating range. The unit is then reassembled, and a functional test verifies airflow, cooling performance, and smooth running before the component is returned to service with the appropriate airworthiness certification. Associated fans and bearing air coolers follow a comparable inspect, replace, balance where applicable, and functional-test sequence.
