About the Hydraulic Motor

A hydraulic motor converts the energy of pressurized hydraulic fluid into continuous rotary mechanical output, serving within the aircraft hydraulic system to drive pumps, fans, generators, or other accessories. Commonly of piston, vane, or gear design, it uses fluid pressure acting on internal elements to produce shaft torque and speed proportional to flow and pressure. In service it provides reliable rotary power wherever hydraulic energy is available. Typical wear modes include scoring and wear of pistons, vanes, gears, and bearing surfaces, degradation of shaft seals causing external leakage, and internal port-plate or valve-plate wear that increases slippage and reduces volumetric efficiency. Contamination-induced abrasion, cavitation damage, and loss of output torque or speed commonly drive overhaul and functional retest.
