About the Precooler Bypass Valve Temperature Control
A precooler bypass valve provides temperature control by modulating how much bleed air passes through the precooler heat exchanger versus bypassing it, thereby regulating the temperature of air entering the pneumatic distribution system. Often thermostatically or pneumatically actuated, it responds to downstream temperature to hold bleed air within safe limits, protecting ducting and downstream environmental control and anti-ice components. Within the air management system it functions as a temperature-modulating bypass element working in concert with the precooler. Overhaul is driven by thermostatic sensor or actuator drift, butterfly or poppet wear, spring fatigue, seat and seal erosion causing leakage, thermal distortion from sustained high temperatures, and contamination-induced sticking that degrade temperature regulation and can allow overtemperature air downstream.
