About the Precooler (RH)

A right-hand precooler is an air-to-air heat exchanger installed in the engine bleed-air system, using fan-discharge cooling air to lower high-pressure bleed temperature before it enters downstream pneumatic, anti-ice, and air-conditioning systems. As a heat-transfer pre-cooler, it employs a brazed plate-fin or tube-and-shell matrix in which hot bleed passes one side and cool fan air the other, with a fan-air modulating valve regulating outlet temperature. Operating under thermal cycling, vibration, and contamination, precoolers degrade through fin and braze-joint cracking, internal and external leakage, core fouling and corrosion that reduce effectiveness, and clogging that raises bleed temperatures. Repair centers on leak detection, core cleaning, braze and fin restoration, and pressure and thermal-performance testing to restore rated cooling.
