Pre-Coolers Repair & Overhaul

FAA & EASA certified pre-coolers repair and overhaul.

About Pre-Coolers in Aircraft Systems

A pre-cooler is a specialized air-to-air heat exchanger positioned in the engine bleed-air system, where it knocks down the temperature of hot, high-pressure bleed air before that air is distributed to the pneumatic and environmental control systems. Drawing on cooler fan or ram air as the heat sink, the pre-cooler protects downstream ducting, valves, and air-conditioning packs from excessive bleed temperatures and helps keep delivered air within system limits. Units in this class are identified by nomenclatures such as Precooler, Precooler Heat Exchanger, and left- and right-hand variants installed on twin-engine installations.

Like other bleed-system heat exchangers, pre-coolers are built as brazed plate-fin or tube-and-fin cores in aluminum or stainless-steel alloys, sized to reject a large heat load in a compact, lightweight package. Their position in the hottest part of the bleed circuit makes them especially vulnerable to thermal fatigue, with repeated heating and cooling cracking braze joints and fin-to-header interfaces over time. Combined with fouling that restricts the core and corrosion that thins the matrix, this leads to leakage and falling cooling efficiency that can trigger overtemperature indications and bleed-system faults. Returning a pre-cooler to service therefore depends on careful inspection, leak repair, and core restoration by a qualified repair station rather than outright replacement of an expensive assembly.

Our Pre-Coolers Repair Process

QTC's pre-cooler overhaul process opens with incoming inspection and a review of the unit's reported condition, followed by thorough cleaning of the internal passages and external fin matrix to remove fouling, oil, and corrosion that degrade heat transfer. The cleaned core is then inspected dimensionally and visually and evaluated using non-destructive techniques to find cracks, blocked passages, and braze defects in the high-temperature regions where thermal fatigue concentrates.

Identified leaks, along with damaged fins, tubes, and header joints, are repaired using methods matched to the core's brazed construction, and restricted passages are cleared to recover airflow and cooling capacity. The unit is then leak- and pressure-tested across its air circuits and functionally verified against the applicable specification to confirm integrity and heat-rejection performance. After it passes all acceptance criteria, QTC completes the documentation and releases the pre-cooler to service with airworthiness certification under its Part 145 approvals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does QTC repair pre-coolers?

Yes. QTC overhauls bleed-air pre-coolers to serviceable condition, including leak repair and core restoration, under our FAA & EASA Part 145 approvals.

What types of pre-coolers does QTC service?

We handle precooler and precooler heat exchanger units, including left-hand and right-hand variants used on twin-engine installations. Send us the part number and configuration and we can confirm capability for your specific unit.

Which aircraft pre-coolers can QTC support?

Our pre-cooler work covers units installed on platforms from makes such as Bombardier, Beech, Cessna, Mitsubishi, Embraer, and Gulfstream. Because capability is part-number driven, we recommend contacting us with specifics to verify coverage.

How long does a pre-cooler overhaul take?

Turnaround varies with the unit's condition and the extent of repair needed after inspection, so we do not quote a fixed time up front. Reach out to QTC with your part number and we will give you an estimate.
