About the Secondary Heat Exchange
A secondary heat exchanger sits downstream of the air cycle machine compressor in the refrigeration pack, cooling the recompressed bleed air before it enters the expansion turbine, which is essential to maximizing cooling output. It is generally a brazed plate-fin core in which hot charge air rejects heat to ram cooling air. Operating with high-temperature bleed air and continual thermal cycling, its dominant degradation modes are fin erosion and crushing, internal and external leaks from cracked fins or brazed joints, corrosion, and contamination fouling that increases pressure drop and lowers effectiveness. Inspection commonly identifies blocked passages, leaking seams, and bowed or damaged cores. Overhaul restores the core through cleaning, fin repair, brazing, and proof and leak testing to recover rated thermal performance and structural integrity.
