Component Overview

A cold air unit is the air cycle machine at the heart of an air conditioning pack, expanding pressurized engine bleed air across a turbine to extract energy and produce refrigerated air for cabin and avionics cooling. Mounted on a common shaft, the turbine and an associated compressor or fan rotate at high speed on bearings, with the turbine's work extraction dropping air temperature substantially. It is central to the Air Cycle system's cooling capability. Typical wear modes include bearing fatigue and spalling, shaft imbalance, blade erosion and tip-rub, seal leakage, and thermal distortion of the housing. Excessive vibration, axial play, contamination from upstream debris, and lubrication breakdown commonly drive overhaul, restoring rotor balance and rated cooling performance.
