Component Overview

The precooler heat exchanger cools hot engine bleed air before it enters downstream pneumatic and air conditioning systems, using cooler fan-air or ram air as the heat sink. Mounted in the engine strut or nacelle, this air-to-air core lowers bleed temperature to protect ducting, valves, and the air conditioning packs and to meet system temperature limits, with a bypass or regulating valve managing the cooling-air flow. As a thin-finned, brazed core operating at high temperature, it is prone to fatigue and thermal-cycle cracking, internal and external corrosion, fin fouling and erosion, and braze-joint or tube leakage that reduces effectiveness and allows cross-leakage. Pressure testing, leak detection, core cleaning, and repair or re-coring restore thermal performance.
