Component Overview

A primary/secondary air-to-air heat exchanger is a staged cooling unit within the air cycle pack that progressively removes heat from compressed bleed air using ram or fan air as the cooling medium. The primary stage cools incoming bleed air ahead of the air cycle machine compressor, while the secondary stage cools the recompressed air before turbine expansion, together maximizing the system's cooling capacity. Typically a brazed plate-fin aluminum core, it handles high differential temperatures and pressures. Overhaul is driven by core fouling, fin corrosion and erosion, thermal-fatigue and vibration cracking, braze-joint separation, header distortion, and internal leakage between hot and cold passages, all of which reduce heat-transfer effectiveness and can degrade overall pack performance and downstream temperature control.
