Component Overview
The bleed air regulating and shutoff valve controls hot, high-pressure air extracted from the engine compressor, both regulating its pressure to a scheduled value and providing positive isolation of the bleed source. Located at the engine bleed port feeding the pneumatic manifold, it combines a regulating function, often via a pneumatic actuator and sensing pressure, with a fail-safe closure capability that protects downstream ducting, valves, and packs from overpressure and overtemperature. Operating in a severe high-temperature environment, it experiences seat and seal erosion and leakage, butterfly and shaft bearing wear, actuator diaphragm and spring fatigue, contamination of sensing passages, and corrosion. Drift in regulated pressure or incomplete shutoff drives functional and leakage testing, recalibration, and overhaul of the regulating and sealing elements.
