Component Overview
The air turbine starter uses high-pressure bleed air, supplied from the APU, a ground cart, or a running engine, to drive a turbine that spins the engine accessory gearbox up to light-off speed during start. Mounted on the gearbox, it converts pneumatic energy through a turbine wheel and reduction gearing to a clutch and output shaft, then disengages automatically once the engine accelerates past starter speed. Subject to high rotational speed and thermal and torque loads, it commonly experiences turbine blade erosion and foreign-object damage, bearing wear, clutch slipping or failure to disengage, gear and spline wear, oil seal leakage, and containment-related distress. Performance, leakage, and clutch function checks, with disassembly inspection, guide bearing, clutch, and turbine overhaul.
