Component Overview

The primary heat exchanger is the first-stage air-to-air cooler in an air conditioning pack, positioned ahead of the air cycle machine to remove a large portion of the heat from incoming bleed air using ram or fan air as the cooling medium. By pre-cooling the charge air, it reduces the thermal load on the secondary heat exchanger and ACM and improves overall pack efficiency. The brazed plate-fin or tube-and-fin core operates under pressure and significant temperature differentials, making it susceptible to fatigue and thermal-cycle cracking, internal and external corrosion, fin damage and fouling, erosion, and braze-joint or tube leakage. Reduced effectiveness and cross-leakage drive inspection, pressure and leak testing, cleaning, and core repair or replacement.
