Component Overview
A refrigeration pack, or air conditioning pack, is the core cooling assembly of an air cycle environmental control system, integrating the air cycle machine, heat exchangers, water extraction stage, and associated control valves into one unit. It receives hot pressurized bleed air, cools it through compression-expansion across the turbine and intercooling stages, removes condensed moisture, and delivers conditioned air to the cabin and avionics. As the heart of the air cycle capability, the pack governs cabin temperature and ventilation. Overhaul is driven by air cycle machine bearing wear and shaft imbalance, turbine and compressor erosion, heat exchanger fouling and core leakage, water separator coalescer degradation, valve sticking, and seal deterioration that reduce cooling efficiency and airflow.
