Component Overview

A bellows is a thin-walled, axially flexible metallic element, usually formed as a series of convolutions, that accommodates dimensional change while sealing or transmitting pressure. In aircraft systems it serves as a pressure-sensing or temperature-sensing capsule, a flexible duct coupling absorbing thermal growth and vibration, or a compensating element within valves and regulators that converts pressure differential into mechanical motion. Its convolutions deflect repeatedly under cyclic pressure and thermal loading. Repair and overhaul are driven principally by convolution fatigue cracking and pinhole leakage from high-cycle flexing, corrosion and stress-corrosion of the thin wall, loss of spring rate or set that shifts calibration, weld-joint failure at end fittings, and external mechanical damage that compromises the pressure boundary.
