Component Overview
An oil cooler is a heat-transfer component that removes heat from engine, generator, or gearbox lubricating oil by transferring it to a cooler medium, typically ram or fan air. Located in the heat-transfer system, it is usually a compact plate-fin or tube-and-fin core in which hot oil flows on one side and cooling air on the other, maintaining oil temperature within limits to preserve viscosity and lubricating film. Its primary function is to protect bearings and gears from thermal breakdown. Service-driven degradation includes air-side fin damage and external fouling, internal sludge or coking that restricts oil passages, corrosion, and crack or braze-joint failures that cause internal or external leakage. Repair and overhaul restore core integrity, clear blockages, and recover thermal effectiveness and leak-tightness.
