Component Overview

A bearing air cooler is an air cycle component that conditions a tapped airflow used to cool and pressurize the bearing cavities of an air cycle machine or associated rotating assembly, helping maintain bearing temperatures and seal integrity within the air cycle system. By lowering the temperature of this dedicated cooling and sealing air, it protects lubrication films and bearing surfaces from thermal damage during high-speed operation. Degradation typically arises from internal fouling and particulate accumulation that restricts flow, core or matrix corrosion, and fin damage reducing heat-transfer efficiency. Cracking or leakage at brazed joints, blockage of narrow passages, and loss of pressure differential are common failure modes that reduce cooling effectiveness and drive cleaning, repair, and performance verification.
