Component Overview

A variable displacement hydraulic pump is the primary pressure source in a hydraulic system, supplying fluid flow that varies with system demand to power actuators, motors, and controls. Typically of axial-piston design with a swashplate or yoke, it adjusts displacement per revolution via an internal compensator that maintains regulated pressure while reducing flow at low demand to limit heat and power draw. Its primary function is to deliver demand-matched, pressure-regulated flow efficiently. Service-driven wear includes scoring and clearance loss in piston bores, slipper and swashplate wear, valve-plate scuffing, bearing degradation, and compensator or control-valve drift, often accelerated by fluid contamination. These conditions cause internal leakage, pressure ripple, loss of compensation, and reduced volumetric efficiency, driving overhaul to restore close tolerances, sealing, and regulated output.
