Component Overview

An NGS heat exchanger is the air-to-air cooler within a nitrogen generation (fuel-tank inerting) system, lowering the temperature of conditioned bleed or ECS air before it enters the air separation module so the membrane fibers receive feed air within their working range. Classified as a heat exchanger, it uses a finned core to reject heat to a cooler air stream, protecting the temperature-sensitive separation membrane and improving inert-gas yield. Degradation arises from core fouling and contamination that reduce effectiveness, fin and braze cracking, internal and external leakage, and corrosion from moisture-laden bleed air. Loss of cooling raises feed temperature and can degrade or damage the downstream separation module, so repair focuses on cleaning, leak and pressure verification, core restoration, and thermal-performance testing.
