Component Overview

A water separator removes condensed free moisture from the cold, saturated air leaving the air cycle machine before that air enters the cabin distribution ducting. Positioned downstream of the cooling turbine and condenser within the air conditioning pack, it protects against fog, ducting corrosion, and ice formation. Most units use a coalescer sock that merges fine droplets into larger ones, which are then swirled out by a swirl vane and collected, with a relief or bypass path for icing or high flow. Repair and overhaul are driven by coalescer media fouling, contamination, and degradation, swirl-vane and housing corrosion, collector and drain blockage, gasket and seal deterioration, and loss of separation efficiency that allows carryover moisture downstream.
