About Check Valves in Aircraft Systems
Check valves are one-way flow devices that allow pneumatic air to pass in a single direction while preventing reverse flow back through the duct. In an aircraft's bleed-air and air-management architecture, they isolate engine bleed sources from one another, protect upstream components from backflow during transients such as engine shutdown or thrust changes, and keep cross-bleed and pneumatic manifolds correctly pressurized. Without dependable non-return behavior, hot or pressurized air can migrate backward into the wrong source, degrading system performance and potentially damaging adjacent components.
A typical check valve uses a spring-loaded poppet, flapper, or dual-plate disc seated against a machined seat. Cracking pressure is set so the valve opens under normal forward flow and reseats firmly when flow reverses. Units in QTC's experience range from small inline non-return valves to large six- and nine-inch duct check valves, reflecting the broad spread of pneumatic line sizes across the fleet.
Repair and overhaul are needed because the high-temperature, high-cycle environment wears the sealing interface over time. Spring fatigue, seat erosion, disc or poppet wear, and contamination drive reverse leakage and sluggish or chattering operation. Restoring tight reseat performance and correct cracking pressure returns the valve to its required one-way function and protects the integrity of the wider pneumatic system.
Our Check Valves Repair Process
QTC overhauls check valves through a structured, repeatable MRO sequence. Each unit is received, inspected, and disassembled, with the seat, poppet or disc, spring, hinge or pivot hardware, and any seals and bushings evaluated against serviceable limits. Worn or out-of-tolerance sealing surfaces, springs, seals, and bushings are replaced or refurbished, and bores and seats are restored as required to re-establish proper geometry.
Following reassembly, the valve is functionally tested to confirm forward-flow operation, correct cracking pressure, and tight reseating with acceptable reverse-leakage performance. Flow and leak checks verify that the non-return characteristic meets specification before the unit is cleaned, marked, and returned to service with appropriate certification. Work is performed in accordance with applicable maintenance data under QTC's FAA and EASA Part 145 approvals.
