About Pressure Regulating Valves in Aircraft Systems
Pressure regulating valves control downstream pneumatic pressure to a target value while typically providing an integral shutoff function. In bleed-air and air-management systems, a pressure regulating and shutoff valve (PRSOV) takes variable, high-pressure engine bleed and delivers a regulated, stable supply to downstream users such as air conditioning packs, anti-ice systems, and pneumatic services, while also serving as the means to isolate the source on command or in a fault condition.
These valves come in several forms. A high-stage (hi-stage) regulator manages the higher-pressure bleed port at lower engine power settings, while pressure reducing and shutoff valves, pressure-actuated butterfly valves, and turbine inlet control valves handle regulation and isolation at other points in the system. Most designs combine a butterfly or poppet flow element with a pneumatic actuator and a regulator section that senses downstream pressure and modulates the valve to hold setpoint.
Overhaul is required because regulation drift is the dominant failure mode. Diaphragm and spring aging, contamination, seal hardening, seat wear, and actuator deterioration cause the regulated pressure to shift outside limits or the valve to respond slowly. Restoring accurate, stable regulation and reliable shutoff protects downstream equipment and keeps the pneumatic system operating within its designed pressure envelope.
Our Pressure Regulating Valves Repair Process
QTC's overhaul of pressure regulating valves follows a disciplined MRO workflow. The valve and its actuator and regulator sections are inspected and disassembled, and the butterfly or poppet, seat, shaft, bushings, diaphragms, springs, and seals are assessed against serviceable limits. Worn seats, seals, bushings, and aged diaphragms are replaced, and the actuator and regulator are overhauled to restore correct response.
After reassembly, the unit is recalibrated to its specified regulation setpoint and then functionally tested across its operating range. Flow, leakage, and functional checks confirm accurate downstream pressure control, correct opening and closing behavior, and positive shutoff before the valve is certified and returned to service. All work is carried out against the applicable maintenance data under QTC's FAA and EASA Part 145 approvals.
